Starting the Convo

Let’s talk about talking:

What do you do when someone you care about is going through a tough time with their mental health? It can be tricky to know how to help, or how to support them in a way that isn’t triggering. but your support can make a huge difference. Here’s how you can be there for your friend or family member and help them get the support they need.

1. Be a Good Listener and Acknowledge their Feelings

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply listen. If your friend wants to talk, give them your full attention. Show them that you care about what they’re going through without judging or trying to fix everything. Just being there can be really comforting.

2. Start the Conversation

It can be hard to bring up a sensitive topic. Starting the conversation can show them that you’re supportive and that you care about their well-being. Here are some conversation starters you can use to gently open up a discussion with a friend or family member who might be struggling:

  • “Hey, I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed like yourself lately. Do you want to talk about it?”

  • “I care about you, and I’m here if you need someone to listen.”

  • “I wanted to check in. How have you been feeling?”

  • “I’m here for you, no matter what. If there’s anything you need or want to talk about, I’m all ears.”

  • “If you’re up for it, would you be comfortable talking about it?”

(Even a simple “are you okay?” is fine)

3. Offer Practical Support

You can also help in practical ways. Maybe you could help them role-play telling their grownups if they haven’t yet, or help them find a counselor. Little gestures, like inviting them to hang out or just checking in, can make a big difference.

4. Take Care of Yourself, Too

Supporting someone can be challenging, so it’s important to take care of yourself as well. Make sure you have people you can talk to and activities that help you relax. If they need to vent at 2am set boundaries! Your mental health comes before everyone else’s. It’s okay to say no, and it’s okay to need support, too!

5. Be Patient

Helping your loved one doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient and let them know you’re there for them, no matter what. Everyone’s journey is different, and your ongoing support can be really encouraging.

Remember:

Your kindness and support can be incredibly powerful. By being there for someone who is struggling, you’re helping them take the first steps toward getting the help they need.
